Vandans is very central and yet slightly off Montafon’s main road, as it nestles in the enchanting landscape of the Rätikon. Over 100 kilometres of marked hiking and touring tracks - predominantly in nature reserves - lead across gloriously colourful Alpine pastures, past unique mountain backdrops and imposing peaks, like the legendary Zimba (2,643 metres), also called the “Montafoner Matterhorn”.
Taking the Golmerbahn cable car or the Rellstal hikers’ bus, you come within minutes to the perfect starting points for your hikes. The Lünersee lake, almost 2,000 metres above sea-level and the jewel of the Rätikon Mountains, makes the area around Vandans literally sparkle with its shimmering water.
Rock-climbers too will be enthusiastic. With the fixed-rope climbing on the “Saula” (2,517 metres - degree of difficulty B/C) or on the “Neyerscharte (2,360 metres - degree of difficulty B), everyone gets their money’s worth. A permanently signposted half-marathon course (training course), excellently marked mountain bike sections, a fitness circuit, climbing garden, sports fields and tennis courts, a shooting range and a heated open-air pool with two beach volleyball courts and a summer curling rink round off the attractive range of sports available in Vandans.
Besides the popular “Golmis Forschungspfad” discovery path and the first alpine coaster in the Vorarlberg, which is a mixture of summer toboggan run and roller coaster, the range of activities for the family is now rounded off with the Waldseilpark Golm climbing park and the Flying Fox Golm.
The established “Sagenweg Vandans sagas trail” offers the opportunity to dip into a fascinating world full of mythical beings and stories. One of a total of 14 information points is by the “Burg Valcastiel” ruined castle, which, located on a towering rock, is all that remains of a fortified structure.
Incidentally, the last manufacturer of cabbage knives in Austria (if not in the world) has his headquarters in Vandans. Annually approx. 4,000 of these knives are produced, in 11 different sizes.
Traditional Montafon costume with its silk embroidery, known to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of Europe, is still handmade today by the ladies of Vandans.
